We instructors and students can do our work in our regular fields, with the literacy for wider connections among us.

We start with BASICS: for all to see – and use – the mix of identities all have, in all cultures.

We have this mix partly by choices, as we read variously, see films, and listen to music: gifts and ties that are ours, those near us, and those of races, classes, ethnicities, and religions farther off.

We have, too – whether we choose or (unwittingly?) inherit them – five areas of culture everyone inhabits: landscapes – our physical spaces; food – gathering us at home and outside; clothing – styles presenting us in public; buildings – setting our manners at home, work, and elsewhere; and transport – more values publicly threading these other four.

Once we begin to be aware of our five inevitable areas, plus some books, film, and music, we can link them in our school discussions, stories, and ideas: wider literacy ties to all our humanity.
